Anyway, we had a great time at Stella's and Eastown Sports Bar! Have fun being the lowest rated bar in Grand Rapids!
Happy to add to the plethora of 1-star reviews that Tavern deserves!
Our party of eight showed up on a very dead Saturday night around 10 or 11—no line at all and not busy inside. Not a single individual in our party could be considered too drunk to be served by any reasonable person. The most sober person in our group (literally 2 drinks) was last to get in. After getting I.D. approved, she barely stumbled because there is a step up into the entryway. (I cannot emphasize enough how slight the "stumble" was.) The bouncer then mumbled something to the effect of "We can't let you in tonight." She and myself, who were the only two not into the bar yet, both thought he was just messing around because of how ludicrous this statement was, so we proceeded to the cash register to pay the $5 cover. The bouncer then grabs her by the shoulders and forces her outside. I called another member of our party and explained the situation. This individual got in touch with a manager and requested their covers be returned so we could all leave. The manager agreed, but did not realize we were a party of eight and instantly regretted his decision. He then pointed at all of us and told his enforcer to "remember all of their faces." Sorry guy, we weren't planning on coming back! I could tell even the guy checking I.D. was uncomfortable because he realized his manager and muscle man made the wrong call. (Thanks for taking some of our heat. We know it wasn't your decision.)
How is this place still open after being exposed for blatant racism within Grand Rapids? That just shows how far as a country we have to go in equality. Even when this place was still The Black Rose it was awful. Service is terrible, way overpriced for drinks and food and the bouncers are incredibly rude and unprofessional. But the fact this establishment still gets patrons as I write this review after it was shown all over the local news an African American citizen was blatantly harassed and assaulted due to his skin color makes me wants to puke. Send the right message and don't give this place your hard-earned money.
Live around the corner. Nice neighborhood tavern. Good selection of beer and spirits without overloading you like most places.
And let's be clear here: this was a case of profiling this individual as a "dumb drunk blonde girl." I am certain that if I had done the same thing, there would have been no issue.
Had great food. Loved the chicken tenders on the Mac & cheese. Ali gave us great service. Definitely will be back
Just an awful place, do not ever go here. The staff is terrible and the drinks suck. What is this place? Is it a club or is a bar? No idea, way too loud and just awful awful awful!
